that contribute to the successful flow and running of a fashion magazine or website publisher vary from journalist to copy-editor to production trainee to editorial assistant to content planning. To join the world of editorial fashion you generally need a

degree. This doesn’t have to be a fashion or journalism degree and most publications, print and digital, prefer to hire people with different knowledge to bring to a fashion magazine.

Daily tasks

The daily life of an editor includes editorial meetings where writers pitch their stories and feedback is given. An editor will spend their days proofreading stories, commissioning new stories, ensuring their writers are on schedule and responding to any breaking news events.

They might even attend photo shoots to ensure the photographer and stylist are communicating the publication’s visual aesthetic accurately.

Working as an editor can have lots of perks, including attending fashion week, travelling, and meeting some amazing fashion designers and experts. Working for your favourite publication and seeing the results of your hard work are career highlights for many editors.

What should you study? What skill do you need?

If you think a career in editorial is for you, you might study fashion journalism or fashion communications, although there are alternate pathways into the industry. To work in editorial, a strong eye for detail, a deep knowledge of the fashion industry, and the ability to multitask are very important skills to develop.

A solid understanding of spelling and grammar will come in handy, as will good organisational skills — you should be a star multi-tasker! Editors have an overview of both the long-term, big picture goals of their publication and well as having to manage the day-to-day tasks to achieve these goals.
